We didn’t win the vote to Remain but the Liberal Democrats will continue fighting for the future of our country
Tim Farron, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has expressed his determination that the party continue to fight for a tolerant, openhearted, optimistic, and outward looking vision of Britain: "We should be proud of our positive, principled, and patriotic campaign for the UK to Remain at the heart of Europe. Our fight for an open, optimistic, liberal, diverse and tolerant Britain is needed now more than ever."
Slough Liberal Democrats campaigner Jo Hanney described the vote to leave the EU as worrying for the future of our town and country: "Almost immediately we've seen the economy weaken with the massive drop in the value of the pound. A weaker economy could mean less money for vital public services such as the NHS, and less money for the research and development that improves our medical services and industry."
However Jo adds that "now we have to look to the future. Immediately after the result thousands more people across the country have joined the Lib Dems because they want to support our positive vision."
Liberal Democrats Federal President, Sal Brinton, put it well:
"While we recognise that the British people have spoken, as Lib Dems we do not recognise the values held by Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson as being the values that truly define Britain."
In the event of a general election, Tim Farron pledges that the Liberal Democrats will stand on a platform of keeping the United Kingdom in the European Union: "The Liberal Democrats will fight the next election on a clear and unequivocal promise to restore Britain's prosperity and role in the world, with the United Kingdom in the European Union, not outside it."
New and existing members of the Liberal Democrats and others are coming together around the #wearethe48 movement to express dismay at the result. There is a growing opinion that people should be given a second chance to express their democratic choice about the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union, especially as the consequences of leaving have become much clearer since Thursday's vote. The Liberal Democrats are the only national party united behind the vision of the United Kingdom's future in the European Union. If you agree, join us to help make this happen.
