Slough Lib Dems Combat Climate Change and Brexit

Campaigning to Stop Brexit is important for many reasons, including combating climate change. Slough Lib Dems are campaigning on both issues.

In the last weekend of August, Slough Lib Dems joined the Defend Democracy protest on Eton Bridge against Boris Johnson's plans to shut down Parliament at a time of national crisis, and also published letters in the local papers setting out 5 achievable wins in Slough against climate change.

Combating climate change requires international cooperation and the EU has already taken some important steps, and Lib Dem Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are pressing for further measures. Other steps must be taken at national and local levels.

Slough Liberal Democrats welcome the motion on Climate Change that was passed at the Slough Borough Council meeting of 23^rd July 2019, but it was Slough Lib Dems who publicly called for a Climate Emergency to be declared by Slough Borough Council in a press release on 27th March. In a letter to the papers in August 2019, Robert Plimmer, chair of Slough Lib Dems, identified five policy items which can be implemented and achieved by December 2020. These include:

1. Greater installation of street located electric vehicle charging points.
2. Making public transport across Slough more affordable to residents and visitors.
3. Slough Borough Council to be carbon-neutral by 2020 - as proposed by Robert Plimmer in 7^thOctober 2008, when he served as a Lib Dem Councillor, and accepted by all councillors.
4. Increasing the amount and variety of items that can be recycled.
5. Improving and more actively publicising the traffic-free cycle routes away from busy main roads across Slough.
