Slough Borough Council - Liberal Democrats local election candidates 2015

24 Apr 2015

Slough Liberal Democrat's team of candidates for the elections to Slough Borough Council on 7th May 2015 includes a former councillor and others with a record of working in their communities.

Robert Plimmer, former Councillor for Foxborough Ward said, "I am very pleased to be standing in my home ward of Cippenham Meadows where I have lived for the last 18 years. Sadly Cippenham Ward is suffering like many parts of Slough from the failures of the Labour-run Council. Labour are making cuts to the support for bus services in Cippenham and across Slough. At the same time Labour councillors spend large amounts of our money on unwanted traffic schemes all over Slough, including in Chalvey, the Three Tuns and Langley."

Robert Plimmer continued, "when Slough Lib Dems launch our manifesto for the local elections in a few days we shall highlight the need to elect councillors who will stand up against the refusal of Slough Labour Party to listen to local residents on issues such as traffic and parking. Slough needs councillors who will challenge the Labour-run Council's waste and their mismanagement of key local services, such as Children's Services, and who will work to get a better deal for Slough residents."

Finally, Robert said he was "pleased that the two parts of the former Foxborough Ward that had elections this year would have a Lib Dem candidate. Gary Griffin, a campaigner for older people, is again standing in Langley St Mary's, and Josephine Hanney, a long-standing member of various Langley organisations, is standing in Kedermister. Khaalid Malik is standing in Central Ward where he lives with his family and where he has been a parent governor in a local school."

Biographies of the Liberal Democrat candidates attached.

1. Central: Khaalid Malik

2. Cippenham Meadows: Robert Plimmer

3. Kedermister: Josephine Hanney

4. Langley St Mary's: Gary Griffin

Central Ward: Khaalid Malik

Khaalid Malik is married with a family who attend Slough schools. He has demonstrated his passionate belief in the importance of providing high quality education for all children by serving as a parent governor for a local primary school in Slough. Khaalid knows from his time working in hotel management that it is very important for organisations to have proper financial controls, and he believes Slough's Labour-run Council has been mismanaging projects such as the Heart of Slough project and also caused traffic chaos in Chalvey and across Slough.

Cippenham Meadows Ward: Robert Plimmer

Robert Plimmer is married has lived in Cippenham Meadows for 18 years, and before becoming a Slough councillor for a Langley Ward he was heavily involved in the former local Lodge Farm tenants and residents association. He served on Slough Council for 10 years. During that time he had a record of action and achievements on issues he regards as important including protecting the environment, working together in the community to improve security and working collaboratively to promote Fair Trade. As Slough's Fair Trade Champion he successfully led the campaign that resulted in Slough being awarded 'Fair Trade Town' status.

Kedermister Ward: Josephine Hanney

Josephine Hanney is married and been a Slough resident for 30 years during which time she has been particularly involved in a range of community activities, including helping to run local carnivals and medical charities. She has worked in the community in Slough for the NHS and for leisure services. She welcomes the extra money the Lib Dems have pledged to spend to improve mental health services and meet the needs of groups for whom the provision is not currently adequate.

Langley St Mary's Ward: Gary Griffin

Gary Griffin is long time resident of Slough who has been working and volunteering for a charity and helping local residents, including protecting the interests of older people. Based on his own experience, and that of the people with whom he works, Gary also knows the importance to local people of good quality, affordable public transport. But public transport in Slough has been damaged by the Labour-run council's mismanagement of the Heart of Slough project and the bus station, and more recently also by their cuts to various bus services in Slough. He asks why Labour can find the money for unwanted traffic schemes, and then makes cuts to the bus services?
