“Action is needed now to tackle crime”, says Lib Dem Aaron Chahal

8 Dec 2019

"Tackling crime, especially knife crime, needs urgent action across many policy areas," says Aaron Chahal, Lib Dem candidate for Slough.

Setting out the details Aaron said: "Lib Dems will invest in community policing to reverse the disastrous Tory cuts to our local police service, and introduce a public health approach to tackling knife crime that has been shown to work in places like Glasgow that had notoriously high levels of such crime.

A public health approach to reducing violent youth crime involves identifying risk factors and treating them, rather than just focusing on the symptoms. This means police, teachers, health professionals, youth workers and social services all working closely together to prevent young people falling prey to gangs and violence.

Lib Dems will invest billions of pounds extra in mental health services, especially for young people. This funding will be guaranteed because the Lib Dems will raise £7 billion a year for improved health and social services from a 1p in the pound rise in Income Tax.

Lib Dems will invest £500 million in youth centres, and here in Slough the Lib Dems have campaigned against both the Labour Council's cuts to youth clubs and the Council's massive hike in charges for using council sports' pitches.

Lib Dem will invest in the probation service and reverse the disastrous Tory policies that have weakened the effectiveness of the service in preventing re-offending."
