Tom McCann meets shoppers at Langley Harrow Market

The fight to protect the NHS, social care, pensions and education services intensified as Tom McCann, Liberal Democrat candidate for Slough, took his campaign to the town's streets. Tom and some of his team were out in the Harrow Market, Langley, on Saturday talking to shoppers.

Tom McCann said, "People are angry at the Tory plans to hit pensioners, local schools and health and care services. By axing the nutritious free school lunches for primary school children the Tories have abandoned Jamie Oliver in favour of Oliver Twist. The Lib Dems forced the Tories to introduce the popular free school lunches as part of the Coalition Government between 2010-15. The free lunches are known to be good for school performance and children's health. So why are the Tories axing them?"

Mr McCann also said, "Local residents are pleased to hear that I work for a healthcare charity in Berkshire and so I know how much the health and social care services are valued in this area. They are also pleased that the Lib Dems have properly costed policies to protect these services, and improve areas such as mental health provision and social care."

Tom continued, "Experts have praised the well-thought out Lib Dems plans, such as putting a penny on income tax, to ensure these vital services have guaranteed long-term funding. But the experts have also attacked both the Labour and Conservative parties for failing to be honest with the public over their tax and spending plans."

Mr McCann claimed that, "There is a great deal of anxiety at the Tory plans to bring in an unfair 'Death Tax' on the frail elderly who need care in their own homes, and to axe the Triple Lock on pensions. The Triple Lock was also forced on the Tories by the Lib Dems in the Coalition Government. Now the Tories want to remove it. Are the Tories introducing these nasty policies to save money because they know the damage their hard Brexit will do?"
