Commenting following the final declaration of results in the local elections, Tim Farron, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, said:

Portsmouth Winning 2016

Portsmouth Lib Dems had a very successful night on Thursday 5th May. Lib Dem councillors were elected in 8 of the city's 14 wards and won the popular vote across the entire city.

"Now that all votes have been counted, it's incredible to see that it is the Liberal Democrats who have made the greatest gains in the English local elections. We have increased our share of seats more than any other party and are the only ones to increase their number of councils.

"This was unthinkable to many last year. In the aftermath of one of the worst general election defeats in history, the Liberal Democrats are starting to re-establish ourselves as the third party in British politics.

Gosport Winning 2016

Gosport BC winning Lib Dem councillors: Dawn Kelly & Richard Earle - who made gains from Con, and Angela Prickett, who took the seat from Labour. Gosport LDs also held all the seats they were defending.

"Our campaigners and activists up and down the UK have helped ensure the Liberal Democrat fightback is building and we are winning council seats in all corners of the country."
